mid 70s caddy
booster scout 2 m/c adapting req'd
elongating mounting holes an adjustment of pluger to m/c
( spacer)
i just clocked it slightly to clear inner fender (gas cyl for back up pressure)
and re indexed the mounting plate 180*
gives a upward angle
id look for a gm fs truck unit with the m/c
it was too much work this route (adapting the m/c )
just grab the the tube fitting for the m/c if you pull from the junk yard

Re: Near "bolt-on" Hydra-Boost brakes

Here is a link to a hydroboot rebuild kit in case anyone needs it in the future. I hope to do my hydroboot this weekend.

Bill,

Has your hyrdoboost been leaking or seeping? All the ones I see at the JY are covered in greasy grime.

Hydra-Boost brakes

Pardon my hijacking here. I want to adapt a GM full size hydra boost to a vintage truck which has the MC mounted below the driver's side floor board. I presently have a 1 ton Chevy MC in that location.

My question is whether the the GM hydraboost will work if the center section (the one with the hoses and metal cylinder hanging off the side) can be rotated 180 degrees so that the hoses come off the bottom of the unit and the cylinder is on the other side. The reason for this is that I don't have room next to the frame rail for the cylinder and the hoses would a tight fit under my floor board. Of course I would keep the reservoirs upright, as my current MC is, with access through a panel in the cab floor.

Thanks in advance.

Did you hook the scout rear brake line to the front port in the astro van proportioning valve and the scout front brake line to the rear port of the astro van proportioning valve? Or is the rear scout line connected to the rear port in the astro van proportioning valve and the scout front brake line connected to front port of the astro van proportioning valve?
Thanks

Re: Near "bolt-on" Hydra-Boost brakes

Good. Mine are the same way. Do you have rear disc? I am really pleased with balance using the stock astro proportioning valve. I am just going to cut another large plastic resivior off and replace the small one with it. The 1.25 in bore on the stock astro MC is perfect. Thoughts?

Re: Near "bolt-on" Hydra-Boost brakes

I replaced the resevoir on mine and being ignorant, I ordered a replacement for the astrovan. Later i saw the truck MC and it was the same but had equal sizes front and back!!!
I would look at that instead of cutting and pasteing!!!
You can order them seperately from the parts stores.

I'm running 4 wheel disc. I didn't try to mod the proportioning valve or anything. Just bolted it on and started driving. They worked so good compared to stock that I didn't try to change it.

I'm sure I could get a little better braking if I eliminated the stock valve and installed just a rear aftermarket valve....but...it works so why mess with it?

Looks good.
I see you went with the spacer vice cutting shaft length.

Have they been road tested yet?

Bill,

I'm thinking of using a spacer too because the SD33 is longer than the SV's and that way my Scout hoses should still be long enough.

Re: Near "bolt-on" Hydra-Boost brakes

Not sure if the SD33 uses the same hose length but mine fit fine.

The motor is longer so the pump may be further away from the firewall.
Have you tried to run yours back there yet?

Not yet and I can't remmeber what hoses I used why I did the hydro boost on my first diesel scout.

Yes the pump is further forward than the SV's pump. I have two options I got a Astro van HB and I have one for a 94 GM 2500 6.5. The 6.5 HB unit has the longer push rod.

Re: Near "bolt-on" Hydra-Boost brakes

AFAIK the booster themselves are the same.
The MC pistons may be different sizes tho.

I would think that if needed, you could use a short steel brake line as an extention like I did on the SOA front lines.

I have the newer O-ring style hoses and I'd kina like to stay with them. Do you know if its hard to extend the O-ring style hose with steel line?

I think they are the same too.

Re: Near "bolt-on" Hydra-Boost brakes

Never looked.
Forgot you have a 1980.
I'm sure there are metal lines avail.
Of course a place that makes hoses could probably hook you up quick with a couple simple ext's or new lines!!

Re: Near "bolt-on" Hydra-Boost brakes

Get the hoses off the astrovan with the hydroboost, my JY didn't charge any more to get them. I cut the o-ring ends that go to the pump and gear box, reflared them with the proper fittings. I had to rebend the tubing a little but essentially the hoses were free. I haven't pressure tested for leaks since it's not running yet but it's worth a try.
